In addition to its national parks, Burundi has several wildlife and nature reserves that protect unique ecosystems, endemic species, and bird habitats.

Bururi Forest Nature Reserve

Location: Bururi Province (Southern Burundi)
Ecosystem: Montane rainforest
Size: ~33 km²
Highlights:
Located in the highlands of Bururi
Rich in endemic plants, orchids, and forest birds
Home to primates like vervet monkeys and colobus monkeys
Ideal for birdwatching and eco-education tours

2. Lake Rwihinda Natural Reserve (Bird Lake)

Location: Karuzi Province (Northeast Burundi)
Ecosystem: Freshwater lake and wetland
Size: ~8 km² (core area), surrounded by protected zones
Highlights:
Known as “Bird Lake” — key site for migratory and native water birds
Important RAMSAR site (internationally protected wetland)
Species include herons, storks, egrets, and ibises

Great for birdwatching, canoe trips, and wetland education

3. Vyanda Forest Reserve

Location: Near Rumonge town, Rumonge Province
Ecosystem: Semi-deciduous forest
Size: ~40 km²
Highlights:
Habitat for primates, including the colobus monkey
Rich in butterflies, medicinal plants, and traditional uses by local communities
Community-managed eco-tourism site

5. Kigwena Natural Forest Reserve

Location: Near Nyanza-Lac, Rumonge Province
Ecosystem: Lowland forest
Size: ~31 km²
Highlights:
Located near Lake Tanganyika, close to the Tanzanian border
Home to monkeys, antelopes, and diverse forest bird species
Offers ecotourism activities, including forest treks and educational visit

Easily combined with beach tourism in Rumonge

6. Rusizi Delta (within Rusizi National Park)

Location: Bujumbura outskirts
Ecosystem: Wetland and floodplain
Status: Part of a national park but functions like a reserve
Highlights:
Home to hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds
Major nesting and feeding ground for migratory species
Important RAMSAR wetland for international conservation

6. Ruvubu National Park

Largest protected area in Burundi, located in the northeast.
Hosts buffaloes, hippos, antelopes, and various birds.
