SIM Cards

SIM Cards & Internet

Staying connected in Burundi is relatively easy, especially in major cities. Mobile coverage is good in urban areas and continues to expand across the country. Here is everything you need to know about SIM cards, internet access, and connectivity.

Mobile Network Operators

Burundi has several telecom providers offering voice, SMS, and mobile internet services:

📱 Econet Leo

One of the largest and most reliable providers in the country.
Offers good 3G/4G coverage in major cities and towns.

📱 Lumitel

Widely used and often competitive in pricing.
Offers solid coverage and affordable data packages.

📱 Onatel

The national telecom operator.
Coverage is broader in some rural areas, though internet speeds may vary.

Coverage is strongest in:

  • Bujumbura
  • Gitega
  • Ngozi
  • Major provincial towns

In remote rural areas, network strength may be weaker.

Buying a SIM Card

SIM cards are easy to obtain.

You can purchase them at:

  • Official telecom shops
  • Airport kiosks (limited availability)
  • Authorized retailers in cities

Requirements:

  • Passport (mandatory for registration)
  • Local registration form

Registration is usually quick and straightforward.

SIM cards are inexpensive.

Cost of SIM & Data

Approximate costs (subject to change):

  • SIM card: 5,000 – 10,000 BIF
  • Daily data bundles: affordable short-term packages available
  • Weekly and monthly plans: better value for longer stays

Data prices are generally affordable compared to many countries.

Mobile Internet Quality

Internet speeds vary depending on location.

In Bujumbura and major cities:

  • 4G widely available
  • 5G available in central zones
  • Stable for browsing, social media, email, and video calls

In rural areas:

  • Speeds may be slower
  • Coverage may fluctuate

For business travelers, mobile data is often more reliable than fixed internet.

Wi-Fi Access

Wi-Fi is available in:

  • Major hotels
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • Business centers
  • Some shopping areas

However:

  • Speed and reliability can vary
  • Power outages may occasionally affect connectivity
  • Not all guesthouses provide Wi-Fi

Many upscale hotels in Bujumbura offer stable internet suitable for remote work.

Power & Charging

Burundi uses:

  • Type C and Type E plugs
  • Voltage: 220V

Bring a universal adapter if necessary.

Power cuts can occasionally occur, though many hotels have generators.

International Roaming

Roaming is available.

It is strongly recommended to purchase a local SIM card for:

  • Lower data costs
  • Better local connectivity
  • Reliable communication

Connectivity in Burundi is improving steadily. With a local SIM card, e Sim Card and data plan, you can stay connected easily throughout your stay.
