Gishora Drum Sanctuary

Located in Gitega Province, Gishora is currently the main sanctuary for the royal drums of the former Kingdom of Burundi to carry on this tradition.

There are two sacred drums linked to agricultural fertility named “Ruciteme” (the one for whom we clear the land) and “Murimirwa” (the one for whom we cultivate).

Since the origins of the Burundian monarchy, drums have held an important place in Burundian society. The generic name for a drum is “Ingoma,” and the stick used to strike it is called “Umurisho.”
