National Parks
Burundi is home to three official national parks, rich in biodiversity, natural beauty, and ecotourism potential.
1. Kibira National Park
- Location: Northwest Burundi, bordering Rwanda
- Type: Montane rainforest
- Size: ~400 km²
- Highlights:
- Located along the Congo-Nile divide
- Dense evergreen rainforest — one of the few remaining in the region
- Home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, baboons, and over 200 bird species
- Rich in medicinal plants and sacred forest areas for local communities
- Ideal for guided hikes, birdwatching, and primatology tours
- Access: From Bujumbura via Muramvya or Bugarama; nearby towns include Teza and Bukeye.
2. Rusizi National Park
- Location: Just north of Bujumbura, along the Rusizi River
- Type: Floodplain and wetlands
- Size: ~90 km²
- Highlights:
- Contains wetlands, savannah, and gallery forests
- Inhabited by hippos, crocodiles, sitatungas, and hundreds of water birds
- Part of a RAMSAR Wetland Site, crucial for biodiversity conservation
- Boat trips offer close-up viewing of animals in their natural habitat
Access: Easily accessible from Bujumbura — perfect for half-day excursions.
3. Ruvubu National Park
- Location: Eastern Burundi, along the Ruvubu River
- Type: Savannah and woodland
- Size: ~508 km² (largest national park in Burundi)
- Highlights:
- Named after the Ruvubu River which runs through the park
- Habitat for hippos, buffaloes, duikers, monkeys, and over 400 bird species
- Features savannah, papyrus swamps, and riverine forests
- Less developed, offering a raw, authentic safari experience
- Access: Via Muyinga or Cankuzo provinces — suited for multi-day eco-tours.
