Lake Rwihinda – The “Lake of Birds”

Often called “the Lake of Birds,” Rwihinda is a biodiversity oasis and a crucial stopover and wintering ground for migratory species. Covering approximately 425 hectares, the lake is relatively shallow and forms part of a broader wetland complex in the region.

One of its most unique features is the presence of floating vegetative islands known locally as “ibishinga.” These drifting islands move with the wind and provide shelter and nesting habitat for birds.
