DESTINATIONS (Updated Administrative Structure – 2025 Reform)

Since June 2025, Burundi has reorganized its administrative structure into:

  • 5 Provinces
  • 42 Communes
  • 3,037 Hills (Collines)

This reform replaces the former 18-province system and creates larger regional tourism identities — which is actually a strong advantage for destination branding.

. NEW TOURISM DESTINATION STRUCTURE

Instead of 18 small provincial pages, your main menu should now show:

1 Province of Bujumbura

Western Burundi – Lake & Urban Experience

Includes:

  • Bujumbura Mairie
  • Bujumbura Rural
  • Bubanza
  • Cibitoke

Tourism Identity:

– Lake Tanganyika
– Kibira Forest
– Rusizi Delta
– German & Belgian War Cemeteries
– Hot springs
– Urban culture & nightlife

This becomes your Gateway Destination.

2 Province of Buhumuza

Eastern Wilderness & Savannah Landscapes

Headquarters: Cankuzo

Includes:

  • Cankuzo
  • Muyinga
  • Ruyigi

Tourism Identity:

– Ruvubu National Park
– Mount Birime
– Rugoti Plains
– Bird migration routes
– Colonial heritage residences
– Savannah & cross-border Tanzania views

This becomes your Safari & Nature Destination.

3 Province of Burunga

Southern Highlands & Sacred Origins

Headquarters: Makamba

Includes:

  • Bururi
  • Makamba
  • Rumonge
  • Rutana

Tourism Identity:

– Southernmost Source of the Nile
– Bururi & Vyanda Reserves
– Mugamba Traditional Houses
– Lake Tanganyika southern coast
– Thermal springs (Muhweza, Munini)
– Royal site of Gashinyira

This becomes your Sacred & Natural Heritage Destination.

4 Province of Butanyerera

Northern Highlands & Tea Landscapes

Headquarters: Ngozi

Includes:

  • Ngozi
  • Kayanza
  • Kirundo

Tourism Identity:

– Teza Tea Plantations
– Rwegura & Kibira Highlands
– Lakes of Kirundo
– Belgian WWI Cemetery
– Mountain landscapes

This becomes your Highlands & Agro-Tourism Destination.

️5 Province of Gitega

Royal Heart of Burundi

Headquarters: Gitega

Includes:

  • Gitega
  • Karusi
  • Muramvya
  • Mwaro

Tourism Identity:

– Royal Capitals (Muramvya, Kiganda)
– Drum Sanctuaries
– Royal Intronization Route
– Gashinyira
– Cultural heritage sites

This becomes your Cultural & Royal Capital Destination.

. IMPORTANT STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE

This reform is not a problem — it is a branding opportunity.

Instead of promoting 18 small provinces, you now promote:

  • 5 Strong Tourism Regions
  • Clear Geographic Identity
  • Easier International Marketing

It becomes similar to:

  • Morocco (Regions)
  • Rwanda (Western, Northern, Southern Province branding)
  • South Africa (Western Cape, Eastern Cape etc.)

. How to Structure Your Website Menu

Instead of:

Destinations → 18 Provinces

You now do:

Destinations → 5 Tourism Regions
  → Sub-page: Former Provinces / Key Cities
  → Sub-page: Parks & Reserves
  → Sub-page: Culture & Heritage
  → Sub-page: Lakes & Mountains

. Even Better (Premium Version)

Each new province page can start with:

  • Hero image
  • 2–3 line identity statement
  • Key attractions icons
  • Interactive map
  • Thematic circuits

(share this directly with your web designer)

Every province page should follow the same layout:

  1. Hero image + short destination introduction
  2. Key attractions
  3. Nature & landscapes
  4. Culture & heritage
  5. Things to do
  6. Where to stay
  7. How to get there
  8. Linked parks, sites & experiences

– This ensures:

  • clear navigation
  • strong SEO
  • easy updates
  • scalability for future content

. Strategic Recommendation

Provinces are the main destination entry point
– Parks, reserves, museums and historic sites appear across multiple sections
– One central database, multiple access paths
